Australian Hoteliers Held Responsible For Minor Gamblers
In the last couple of years, South Australia has developed a serious gambling problem. Every month, more players get addicted to gambling, and a large part of them is below 18 years old. The ones who are being blamed for the enormous increase of minor gamblers are the Australian hoteliers. They are accused of motivating young people to gamble in their establishments.
Ian Horne, the General Manager of the South Australian department of the Australian Hotels Association reacted shocked to the accusation. He claims to be unaware of the large group of minor gamblers but he added to be even more shocked of being held responsible for this. He believes that the Independent Gambling Authorized has the obligation to share all the information about minor gambling with the hoteliers and the Liquor Licensing Commissioner and together they should solve the problem.
Chairman of the Independent Gambling Authority, Stephen Howells stated yesterday before the Statutory Authorities Review Committee that South Australia has a severe under-age gambling problem. He thinks that the hoteliers are a big part of the problem. He made clear that he knows that not all hoteliers are irresponsible when it comes to under-age gambling, put some of them definitely are, and they blow it for all the rest. He added that he wants to reach a 20% decrease of minor gamblers in South Australia in the next 2 years. If this goal can be reached, it is proof that the Australian pokies laws are actually working.
